Authorities say a virus, circovirus 1, is known to cause disease in pigs, but not humans, contaminated one of two types of vaccination for rotavirus disease. Food and Drug Administration Director Dr. Margaret Hamburg supports this by saying "There is no evidence at this time that this material poses a safety risk". Before these vaccines were made available, 50,000 hospitalizations and several dozen deaths in the U.S. were due to rotavirus. This disease was found when a research team was evaluating certain vaccines. It was in the early stage, and now the drug agency is thinking of other techniques to find viruses. Even though the virus that infected the vaccination has never affected humans, all people who have recieved a dose have been switched to the other vaccination, which is not infected, for the next two doses.
